I guess we can’t really count it as ‘full’ success, but I’ll claim it nonetheless. Geneva slept in her crib last night from 9 p.m. to about 3 a.m. When she started waking every 15 minutes, I moved her back to her carseat and she gave me three more hours of consecutive sleep. When Gramma J. was here, she talked me into installing the bumper in the crib. She kept saying how I had one in my crib and lil’ G. wouldn’t suffocate on it (unlike all the scare literature out there tells you). Soooo, last night after battling with Geneva in her swaddle – which she was very unhappy with – I unwrapped her and positioned her in the corner of the crib. I guess this must have mimicked the way she sleeps in her carseat and she knocked out.
Rob and I nearly ran a victory lap around the house.
We’ll try again tonight and hope she makes it a little further. On another front, I’ll go ahead and warn our lovely readers that Geneva’s poop will be discussed. A lot. This will probably embarrass her to no end when she’s 13, but that’s still a while off. We’re in about day 7 of the “Poo Strike”. My regular little girl has whittled her really dirty diapers down to one every 24 hours. I’m assured this is normal in that breastfed kids tend to suck every nutrient from the breast milk resulting in a reduction of poos. I’m getting the feeling that she’s going through some kind of a growth spurt due to her eating more frequently, taking tons of naps, and fighting us at night. We visit her pediatrician next week for her four month check-up and some vaccinations, so I’ll run all this by the Doc then.
Wish us luck for tonight!

Oh, the quiet solitude of Bink practice.
When Mom (Gramma J.) comes down to visit from Tennessee, us girls like to pile in the car for a shopping excursion. If anything, this gives me an opportunity to wear lil’ G out with the added bonus of showing everyone how cute she is! Ha ha. Today we ventured to Petsmart, Home Depot, Alon’s Bakery in Virginia Highlands, and a bead store. There were ooohs and ahhhs at every turn.
Rob and I took Geneva to the Scott Antique Market last weekend. Since it is a multi-day event, lil’ G and I dropped by on Friday to get an early peek. I could not make it ten feet down an aisle without someone stopping us to check out the baby. My head was so swollen I could barely make it out the door and back to the car. Talk about an inflated ego! I related this to Rob and he didn’t believe me. So off we go on Saturday and sure enough, even with Rob pushing the stroller, ladies and gents alike paused to goo at our kiddo.
Most of this stuff makes me so full of pride that I can’t stand myself. I never expected such a cute one to be all mine. I mean, I knew I’d have a good-looking kid, but sheesh – I have a superstar on my hands. Maybe she’s the next Gerber baby…get that kid an agent!
We feel very thankful to have such a lovely healthy girl and such wonderful family to enjoy her with. On the sleep side of things, we had a repeat of the previous night: awake at 12, 3 and 6:30 a.m. Blah! A bonus was that we were able to get her to sleep in her crib from 9 p.m. to midnight.
That’s all for now. Geneva’s waking from her nap and doesn’t sound happy about things. She might have a diaper change in her immediate future.

Kicking and screaming into the 21st century!
Well, ol’ Aunt Hannah convinced me to begin blogging about our Geneva and her daily goings-on. I suppose this will really make things simple for those of you seeking updates, recent photos, and the like. The title of this post is purposefully misspelled just to illustrate what kind of a bloggy world us Oviatts are entering into. It’s an inside joke of sorts. This first post will be a little lengthy just to get everyone up to speed and then we should settle into a pattern of blurbs and brief musings.
Anyhoo, on to the more interesting bits about our little bit Geneva. She happens to be napping at the moment. I should actually be in the shower while she sleeps – y’know, taking full advantage of some “me time”. I actually despise that particular phrase and think it sounds pretty selfish. This time in Geneva’s life is relatively small when taken in context of the Big Picture. “Me Time” will come eventually. I have to keep reminding myself of this when the child just won’t go to sleep or is being trying…
Geneva will be four months old on August 25. It’s shocking to me how fast she’s growing and developing. A few folks have commented on how she’s become her own little person. Her personality is forming it’s edges and it’s neat to see. As most of you know, Geneva’s a smiley girl. She has a happy temperament and fusses very little.
Well, except for bedtime. We’ve been having difficulties recently with bedtime – with both the ‘going to sleep’ part AND the ’staying asleep’ part. After two straight months of glorious sleeping-through-the-night, Lil G has decided to rouse us with EARLY morning serenades. Typically, I can pop the Bink in her mouth and she’s back out. However, last night was a tough one. She nursed twice and still fussed and fought sleep. She ends up getting hungover by morning and sleeps really late or takes a marathon nap. As some of you may know, we’re attempting the full-on transition into her crib and it’s not going so hot. She naps in her crib and is happy as a clam. But nighttime is a different beast all together – Geneva screams like we’re pinching her toes and twisting her ears. Rob and I have pretty involved whispered discussions on what steps to take next. We’re looking into options like:
- tricking her (by removing her once she’s asleep from her bed of choice to the crib)
- letting her cry-it-out (which has merited enough discussion for it’s own blog post)
- swaddling her (which could possibly just be another bad habit to break)
- and letting her just stay where she is until “she’s ready” (but I’m dubious as to whether a child this small would actually indicate, “Hey Mom, move me into the crib now”).
That’s about where we stand with things now. I’ll be back at another free moment to add on. We love y’all!
